Gift giving is an all too common in the business industry. stores give their consumers small tokens, employers give their employees bonuses, and companies give their business partners gift packages. The act solidifies business associations and earns loyalty from recipients. But with all the positive effects it brings, it can also turn into a problem when people give executive gifts to the executives of a potential client to court business favors.
Companies usually give their consumers and employees small and regular corporate products, such as ballpoint pens, flashlights, paperweights, notepads, and refrigerator magnets. For their client clients and potential stockholders, they give more pricey items, such as wine hampers, concert tickets, and high-end gadgets.
It might be unimportant in the beginning to accept expensive tokens from another company. But there are consequences that normally go with especially if both companies are in the brink of signing a new deal. The act may be deemed dishonorable and even labeled as a bribe if people only agree to a contract after accepting an extravagant gift. To avoid such things from happening, there are corporations that enforce rules stating what their employees can accept or not from another establishment.
Different corporations have different policies on receiving tokens. Some are lenient, allowing their staff members to accept tokens from other organizations or clients but they must declare the worth of their gift. For other businesses, they enforce stricter rules that state their staff are completely prohibited from accepting anything at all.
Despite appearing harsh, the policy is actually understandable and fair. It is upsetting for any establishment to be accused of bestowing another business a contract and choosing it over the others because they have allegedly accepted a bribe. At the same time, no establishment wants to lose out a deal just because another company was favored over them after it gives out an expensive gift.
Even the deal was honestly made without the pressure of the gift, the act of gift giving would still certainly look like a bribe. That’s why organizations prefer to play it safe and avoid anything of the sort from occuring by becoming aware of the other company’s gift accepting policies first.
